Hey, I’m Whitney. I’m a documentary birth photographer based out of Myrtle Beach, SC. My specialty is telling your unique and unscripted birth story in images. I take a very hands off approach to photographing births so that the resulting images are simply the undisturbed, raw beauty of the day you meet your newest little one. My own birth photos are among my most prized possessions. Those images have the ability to transport me right to the moment the shutter was clicked, and to evoke emotions that I can barely recall after the years have passed. It’s a priceless possession that I am thrilled to be able to provide to other growing families as well.
In addition to birth photography I also offer documentary and lifestyle maternity, newborn, and motherhood photo (and video) sessions. I believe the raw, messy, untouched beauty of life doesn’t just exist in the birth room. So if you love expertly posed and styled images that are meticulously edited to perfection then I am not the photographer for you – I could definitely make some recommendations though! When I look at my own photos I want to see a snapshot of my life, as it is, at that time. I want to see the crayon marks on the walls, the laundry piled in the corner (okay, maybe not the laundry), remnants of my child’s lunch lingering at the corners of his mouth…I want to see real life. Those are the photos that speak to me, make me feel something, and remind me of just how fleeting childhood is. And those are the images I want to give you.
A little about my life:
I am originally from Columbus, OH, but now live in Myrtle Beach with my husband and our 4 sons. My boys range from 3 years old to 13 years old – so as you can imagine my life is utter chaos 200% of the time. It’s loud, it’s messy, it smells a little weird….but we love it. My most recent journey through the many facets of motherhood was becoming a surrogate to an adorable chunk of a little guy for an awesome local family. If you ask my friends, they’ll tell you I’m a pretty natural minded person – I would say crunchy, but my husband hates that word. Give me all the herbs, essential oils, homeopathics, and any other crazy hippy voodoo you can think of. Babywearing, breast feeding, cloth diapering, home birthing, I did it all. But hey, I also formula fed, disposable diapered, and gave birth in hospitals…so I’m definitely a “whatever floats your boat” kind of gal.
When I started my business many years ago, I knew that I wanted to find a way to give back to my community. To accomplish this I am a registered volunteer photographer for two wonderful organizations. First is Red Thread Sessions, a charity that provides adoptive families with free photography services. Next is Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (NILMDTS), which is a charity organization that provides bereavement photography for families that have experienced loss. I was both adopted and suffered pregnancy losses, so these two organizations are very dear to my heart.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out who the woman behind the camera is and I hope to get to know you as well!
