This birth was, by far, one of the longest births I’ve ever attended. Little baby girl just did not want to come out despite the fact that mom’s water had broken half a day before labor ever started. This particular birth story really illustrates how important it is to have a good birth plan though. Mom had worked so hard researching all of her options before she went into labor and compiling a birth plan that not only outlined her perfect birth, but also the path she preferred to take if they needed to deviate from that plan. And it really paid off. Mom had originally intended to have as natural of a birth as possible, but due to some extenuating circumstances needed a little help to get baby moving on out. Because she did her research and really prepared with her husband and her doula, she remained in complete control of everything that happened during her birth. From the types of interventions she preferred to the order in which she received them…even being able to have immediate skin to skin and breastfeeding after her delivery. It was such a beautiful example of how the care providers – who happened to be the awesome Waccamaw midwives – mother, and support team should work together to get baby delivered as safely as possible. There was no rushing, no question of what happens next, it was perfect…and so is baby Claire, nicknamed Claire-Bear by her proud daddy.
