A Blessingway, also known as a “Mother Blessing” is such a beautiful alternative or addition to a baby shower. Rather than the traditional baby shower where everyone gets together to give the expecting family gifts for their new baby, a blessingway is all about celebrating motherhood and embracing sisterhood. I have attended several blessingways (here is another post about one I attended a couple years ago) and they can vary from a light, fun event where women gather to chat about birth, encourage the mom-to-be and eat food to a very spiritual event in which the special women in the mother-to-be’s life come together to prepare her mind and spirit for the up coming life transformation. There are lots of symbolic rituals and activities that can take place as well. Really, a blessingway can be tailored to whatever personality and wishes the new mommy may have.
Anna’s blessingway was a gathering of women, important in her life in one way or another, that came together to encourage her, offer wisdom and bring mementos for her to use during her birthing time. All of these sweet mamas wrote out birth affirmations, prayers and encouragements for her to read while in labor. They each brought a bead to string onto a birth necklace for Anna to wear during her birth. Of course there was great food and lots of chatting about positive birth stories. My personal favorite part is when everyone pitched in to draw a beautiful henna tree on her belly. At the end when everyone was saying their goodbyes Anna gave each woman in attendance a candle to light when they received word that she was in labor. That candle is to burn until her sweet baby boy is resting soundly in her arms. While the candle is lit they can send her positive birthing vibes and prayers to carry her through the delivery of her baby.
I absolutely love every part of this event and very much look forward to having a blessingway with the birth of my next child
